This waterfall was 1st discovered by senior Siang Hui and subsequently documented by Jan almost 10 years ago.(link) For a long time it has been a well kept secret only known to dedicated waterfall hunters. For reasons unknown, the state forestry never did gazette this waterfall for eco tourism and no permit was issued for its entry. This finally changed in Feb 2024 where it was finally added to the forest reserve hiking permit list. Visitors are also NOT required to hire a mountain guide for entry.(source)

Lubuk Tupai Fall is known for its large & deep crystal clear pool which has a rather gentle current with soft sandy riverbed. This makes it very suitable for swimming but do be aware that closer to the base of the waterfall, there may be strong undercurrents that may be difficult to escape from. Visitors are advised to practice caution and pay close attention to the change in weather as well. Huge volumes of water may come rushing downriver if it starts raining. This waterfall is suitable for a group of beginners with guidance as the trail is quite clear without much elevation.

Lubuk Tupai (Aerial View)

Head to Batang Kali town as the landmark. From the town take the exit at the T-junction towards Kg Kuantan.(Image 1) Proceed inwards and take the left junction at the Y-junction towards Kg Hulu Rening. Plenty of riverside resorts and campsites have sprung up at Kg Hulu Rening over the years to capitalize on the influx of visitors attracted to the clean clear waters of the Sg Rening river. Proceed to the trailhead (here) and park by the road shoulder without obstructing the main path.

Proceed by foot from here where the trail on the left side of the stream (this is not Sg Rening) leads inwards on a gravel double track road. Proceed on the clear path for around 3.8km and keep note of the left junction after passing the 2nd stream crossing. Take this left junction down to the river. After another short stretch of distance, Lubuk Tupai Fall will be visible on the left.

Jan's visit back in 2013

It is possible to scramble on the right of the rock surface to get a closer look at the waterfall nested inside steep V-shaped rock canyons.(Image 2.) A strong breeze emanates from the waterfall along with high volumes of water and lack of footholds makes it difficult to get close to the waterfall.
