Waterfalls  for the adventurous

Eco-sports in the Highlands

There are 2 main streams draining into this part of the valley where the resorts are situated. One flowing down from Gunong Ulu kali and another across the road from Gunong Bunga Buah.

The Resorts managements, fascinated by the beautiful terrain and flora, have created tracking trails for the guests to learn about the jungle. We from our trekking days have also found these couple of Waterfalls that are relatively easy to reach.

There is a waterfall is on the tributary from Genting Highlands. The trail to reach this waterfall starts besides the GVR apartments that are on the lowest level.

Note the position of this river passing by from the extreme left. Some where at the slope look for a clear trail to descend into an adjoining ravine towards the right!

Once down at the base, the terrain will quickly leads you to head for and meets up with the river bank. From this point onwards, it is less than a kilometer of river trekking. Starting walking using the rocks in the river as stepping stones. At one point when the bank get steep, by pass the boulders using a trail on the right bank.

Vegetation here is bamboo forest and it get thicker as you move downstream.

You see us making our way through the bamboo.

There was a clear trail, at that time of our visit, no cutting or clearing was needed to move forward.

This waterfall has a 20 meter drop. The relative height and the angle of descend is well demonstrated by the model in the picture itself.

Though this destination is near to Kuala Lumpur and offer good adventure, the silting of the river and the muddy water of the waterfall killed our enthusiasm.

The next series of cascades is on the stream from Bunga Buah. To reach these cascades, turn in to the access road to GVR. From the entrance look for a branch road to the right. This should lead to some land bank and watch for signboard on the right at the jungle fringe, to signal the opening to a trail.

This is a broad trail that moves a short distance uphill and then down into a ravine. The vegetation here is mixed timber trees, some bamboo interspersed with low scrubs.

From the spot where this picture was taken, momentary reprieve before the trail gets into a very steep downhill.

Finally reaching some rocky area, this waterfall is hidden behind the boulders where the trail ends.

It is 10 meters drop followed by another 10 meters cascade.

Returning to the top of the waterfall and moving upstream, the river had passed through another series of cascades. This photograph shows a lower waterfall - some 8 meters drop.

It is preceded by a cascade and another low waterfall. This upper waterfall is nothing to shout about, but the surrounding is scenic.

The Resorts have come out with many arranged activities [most not mentioned here] for their guests who have come here, needed some outdoor recreations, scenic jungle trails and golfing etc.

Do make inquiries at the information counters. You will be surprised at the many activities available to make your stay even more exciting.

In this last quarter 1999. The widening of the road reached these series of cascades. Keep your fingers crossed that they are still around when the road works are finished!
